[Sports Seoul | Reporter Shin Jae-yoo] Hwaum Law Office, led by Managing Attorney Jae-kwon Jeong, is drawing attention for providing tailored legal services that enable startups to focus on their businesses and rapidly strengthen their competitiveness.
Attorney Jeong graduated from the College of Engineering at Seoul National University. After working at the Ministry of Science and Technology, he obtained his law degree and attorney qualification from Chungnam National University Law School. He subsequently studied intellectual property law at the Seoul National University Graduate School of Law, where he earned a doctoral degree in law.
After gaining practical experience at several law firms, Attorney Jeong established Hwaum Law Office in Gangnam, Seoul, with the goal of contributing to a harmonious society in which people can live and work together.
Hwaum Law Office is a law firm composed of attorneys with the knowledge and experience needed by startups and small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to create new markets through innovative technologies and ideas.
The firm provides legal services covering corporate formation, technology transfer agreements, technology-based startups, intellectual property applications and litigation, regulatory sandboxes, compliance, personal information protection, and investment agreement advisory services.
In particular, the firm proactively reviews potential legal and regulatory issues to help startups avoid disputes and provides legal solutions designed to protect its clients’ interests.
Drawing on his experience building a research and patent management system at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Attorney Jeong launched Cello, Korea’s first online legal service brand of its kind.
Through Cello, clients can establish a corporation online without visiting a government office, within one to three days and at approximately half the conventional registration cost. Trademark applications can also be filed electronically with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), with applications generally completed within one to two days.
The service provides an integrated, one-stop process for submitting applications and completing signatures, while keeping clients informed of the progress through their websites or email.
Hwaum Law Office has also established partnerships with companies providing services essential to early-stage startups—including shared-office platforms such as WeWork, website hosting companies, and tax-accounting service platforms—to offer free or discounted benefits to clients who engage the firm for corporate formation or trademark applications.
Attorney Jeong, who was selected for the “2020 Innovative Korea & POWER KOREA Award” in the Sports Seoul Life Special Feature, emphasized: “To prevent competitors from taking your trademark rights, you should file for trademark protection before launching your business or during the preparation stage.”
